Andean Region in Colombia

This is the most populated region in the country which is characterised by its diverse topography given by the Andes. The three branches of the Andes crossing the country from the South to the north create a dramatic mixed of sceneries from high snow-capped mountains, large highland plateaus, deep canyons to wide valleys. The weather, fauna and flora also varies accordingly to the altitude.

It´s weather:

As the weather varies accordingly to the altitude, the average temperature could be between  15-23°C, at 2000-3000 m, between  20-23°C, at  1000-2000m, and around 28°C up to 1000m.


It's People, traditions and culture:

The traditions, culture and even the personality of the people in this region varies depending on their location. Rolos or Cachacos is the name given to people fromBogotá. Paisas is the name for the people born in the coffee region, they are recognised as  excellent hostess, creative and talkative people.

Boyacenses are people from Boyacá, they are amazing and warm people, very hard workers and love potato and beer.

Santandereanos are from Norte de Santander and Santander, they are lovely people who love eating hormigas culonas (a type of Colombian ant).

It's traditional Food:

As well as the diverse topography of this region is the food, there different type of dishes depending on the area, here we are mention only some of the most popular:

Ajiaco: A creamy potato soup served with chicken, capers, corn on the cob, cream, avocado and rice.
Bandeja Paisa: The typical food from Medellin and the department of Antioquia. it consists of red kidney beans, rice, ground beef, avocado, fried egg, fried plantain, chorizo, pork crackling and arepa (corn pastry).
Changua: A soup made of milk, water, salt, egg, bread, rusks, onions as fresh coriander. It is traditional for breakfast.
Hormigas culonas: (fat fried ants).

What to do:

This region has so much to offer from the cultural events in the big cities, the history found in their museums and colonial towns to interactive experiences in working coffee farms. This region also offers the opportunity for ecotourism in the Natural park and for extreme sports like white - water rafting and paragliding in San Gil, and  mountain biking and horse riding in Villa de Leyva. 

Where to go:

There are many beautiful places to visit in this region, here are some of the ones you shouldn't miss:

Bogotá: The capital with is great combination of tradition and modernization. 
Villa de Leyva: One of the most beautiful colonial towns in the country that seems to be frozen in time. It is famous also for its abundance of fossils from the Cretaceous and Mesozoic periods, when this area was under water.
Medellin: the second largest city in Colombia which offers you a nice weather and a variety of cultural activities.
Barichara: A beautiful colonial town in Santander with cobblestone streets and white washed buildings with red tiled roofs that look new as the day they were built about 300 year ago.
The beautiful and traditional towns in the coffee region like: Santafe de Antioquia, Salento and Filandia in Quindio

El Cocuy National Natural Park
Chingaza National Natural Park
Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary
Los Nevados National Natural Park
Otún Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary

When to go:

Any time of the year is good to visit this region, but if you want to participate in one the festivals and learn more about their traditions and culture, these are some good examples:

January: Manizales Fair, the bullfighting fair.
March and April: Ibero-American Theatre Festival of Bogota
July: Reinado del Bambuco in Neiva, Huila
August:  Flowers Fair in Medellín
December: Festival of the Lights in Villa de Leyva, Boyacá.
